Bicycles!

May Day! May Day! Do you know what month this is? It's National Bike Month!

Queen - Bicycle Race

The bicycle is one of my favorite inventions! It's been around for nearly 200 years, in one form or another. And, there is even speculation that Leonardo DaVinci made drawings of a similar vehicle in the late 1490s!!

I have been riding bikes since I was a baby. Starting, of course, with the typical red tricycle.

I even had a John Deere tractor that was ridden like a bicycle when I was 4. I used to ride it with my friend, Joey, who lived next door to my grandparents. This one is similar, but they don't make them like the one I had in the '60s.

As I got older, I went through a couple of stages of bigger bikes. My favorite for a long time was a purple Schwinn with a flowered banana seat that I had in the early '70s, from about 10-13 years old. Loved that bike and popped many a wheelie with it! This one is similar.

When I was about 14, my dad bought my mom and I matching bikes. Dark metallic blue 10-speeds. I loved riding everywhere on that bike with my best friend. We had some great adventures, just riding around our town to the main street shops and high school swimming pool, etc. Lots of good memories.

Finally, as an adult, I bought myself an electric bicycle. I love it! Some day, I may buy another regular old ten-speed. But, until then, I will stick with my electric. I currently have a Currie Ezip Trailz (with 2 batteries to cover longer distance,) but I'd really like to have one a little more light-weight, like the one below. The center-of-gravity would be a little easier to handle, too.

And, someday, maybe I'll have another tricycle ... electric, most likely!

A great thing about bicycles is that they can be ridden year-round, indoors and out. How can you ride a bicycle indoors, you ask!?
Well, there are ways. Of course, there is the exercycle. This is similar to mine (which I have had for over 15 years and works like new!) and you can monitor distance, time and calories burned.

There's also the pedal exercisor. I have this one. It's so easy to use. I keep it by my desk and use it whenever I feel like it. They last forever.

And, there is the bike stand, that you can attach your actual bicycle to.

There are so many great types of bikes out there for any use you enjoy, from city biking to mountain biking to marathons! You can ride solo or you can ride in groups. And, you can ride for your favorite causes!

This month, the League of American Bicyclists, is sponsoring National Bike Month (as they have since 1956!) Check out the link and find a lot of resources and events that you (and your friends) can participate in.
